Who is the space whale in Beyond These Stars?

Kewa is a lonely, sentient Space Whale whose back becomes your Peeps' home. They have their own needs, wishes and reasons to travel, so your relationship involves learning to live together and choosing a route together.

Your buildings and mines sit on a layer of debris above Kewa. You cannot build on their skin or mine into it. That makes Beyond These Stars terraforming a way to reshape your settlement's terrain while caring for the ecosystem that supports you both.

How do you talk to Kewa in Beyond These Stars?

Follow the alien transmitter storyline, connect the communicator and complete your first conversation with Kewa to open galaxy travel.

Follow the transmitter discovery

The old alien ruin contains what Lottie identifies as a transmitter core that could let the Peeps speak to the whale. Follow that discovery through the Beyond These Stars Strange Transmitter objectives.

Connect and answer the communicator

Once the communicator is connected to the alien technology, new communications become available. Answer Kewa through the communicator's Select Response area to begin talking.

Finish the first conversation

You learn Kewa's name, hear how water and toxic waste affect them, and reach the invitation to choose a destination. The game then announces that you can travel through the galaxy.

How do you keep Kewa the space whale happy?

Plant trees, create rivers around your settlements, minimise pollution and choose considerate dialogue to help Kewa feel better. Watch their happiness meter to see how your decisions affect them.

Toxic waste causes Kewa physical pain. During your first conversation, they describe a biting, itching sensation and ask you to stop it. If that sounds familiar, make Beyond These Stars pollution your next priority rather than leaving the waste problem to grow.

Positive dialogue raises happiness a little; hurtful replies lower it a little. Choose supportive responses if you want to improve the relationship, and keep tending the biome alongside those conversations. Health affects happiness too.

What does a healthy relationship with Kewa unlock?

A healthy Kewa travels faster and recovers more memories, while an extremely happy Kewa can grow fruit trees that boost Peep happiness. First contact opens travel; ongoing care shapes the benefits you get afterward.

Kewa describes flowing water lifting the fog from their mind and bringing back weak memories. Creating rivers therefore supports both your habitat and your companion's recovery.

Those memories can be pleasant or painful. Kewa's health also affects story progression and its conclusion, giving you a reason to care for them beyond getting to the next destination faster.

Why does Kewa leave a system or change course?

Kewa can initiate emergency travel when prolonged heat makes them too unhappy, and low stamina can send them through debris fields to feed. These are different problems with different consequences.

Staying too long somewhere hot affects Kewa's health and happiness. If happiness falls too far, they travel somewhere cold to cool down. A weak relationship also makes it harder to predict how long Kewa will stay in a system, so factor that uncertainty into outpost plans.

Low stamina prompts feeding detours through debris fields. Falling debris can break buildings; repair them to resume production. Kewa does not eat your settled planets.

Once first contact opens the Galaxy Map, you can request travel to star nodes and investigate them with a Scout Ship. Keep caring for Kewa as you go, then follow Beyond These Stars outposts to find planets and resources beyond your living home.
